Whether it's at Division III Capital, Division II Valdosta State or the Division I-A level, damauler12, a.k.a. vick12, just wins. With 29 national championships and more than 100 conference championships to his name(s), damauler12 is one of the more successful coaches Gridiron Dynasty has to offer. We picked his brain to learn a thing or two about his winning formula.

damauler12: I am a 40 year old single father of 1 awesome son Ryan. I work as a Facility Manager/Tournament Director in Illinois.
WIS: How did you find out about WhatIfSports.com?
damauler12: I think in a Bill Simmons article. Or maybe it was my boy qb4usf.
WIS: What are some of your interests and hobbies?
damauler12: I love football obv. I am also very involved in volleyball and actually spent a few seasons coaching at the NCAA level. I am also a semi-retired poker player who was a pretty decent MTT player. (Once took 2nd in an online Major.) I prefer online poker over live poker, so since Black Friday I have not played a single hand of online poker. Hopefully with what's happening in Vegas maybe I will be able to play again sooner than later.
WIS: Which five people, past or present, sit at your dream roundtable discussion?
damauler12: Hmmm...How about Hugh Hefner and whatever 4 guests he decides on!!!
WIS: Did you play any sports growing up?
damauler12: The usual football and basketball. I also took up volleyball later on in High School and ended up making a career of it.
WIS: Who are your favorite all-time players?
WIS: Do you have any sports-related items on your bucket list that you have not yet done?
damauler12: I would love to attend the BCS Championship game. However, by FAR my bucket list item is to play the WSOP Main Event. Either my schedule or bankroll has kept me from it waaaay too many times.
WIS: What is your favorite WIS moment?
damauler12: Now the good stuff!!! Definitely winning my 1st NC at Capital. That was my huge class experiment and I was glad that it not only ended up being a success, but that I netted my 1st NC from it.
WIS: You have teams representing three divisions. Do you have a preference for one division over another?
damauler12: I used to have no preference, but now I really enjoy D1a. The recruiting aspect is so much more difficult and fun for me now. Being at some really nice Elites doesn't hurt either!
WIS: At DII Winona State, you coached as damauler12 for eight seasons and then moved up to DIAA after winning the national championship. Just five seasons later, you resumed your career at Winona State as vick12 and fittingly won the national championship your first season back. Vick12 has accumulated seven national championships and 18 conference championships in 19 seasons at Winona State. Was Winona State always the destination you had in mind with the vick12 ID? Is vick12 at Winona State for the long haul?
damauler12: I'll start from the end and work forward. I would say I am at Winona State for the long haul. It's one of my true “baby's” of GD and they can be verrrry hard to let go of! I actually started the vick12 ID simply to get a cheaper season of GD to try my Capital experiment! If I knew then that I would be good enough to warrant a WIS interview...I probably only stay on damauler12. Anyway...back to Winona. The reason I left Winona was because I made a semi-last minute decision to make the jump to D1AA. Since job change period was over, they were available to anyone with a Warner ID and no team. It was almost going to go Sim and I convinced jtwhiz to co-coach it with me for a few seasons. After that, I took back over with the vick12 ID full time.
WIS: While at Ohio State in the Hayes world, you coached for 19 seasons, amassing five conference championships and three national championship runner-ups. You then abruptly jumped ship for conference rival Penn State. Are you at all concerned about your reception when the Nittany Lions next travel to Columbus? What prompted the move?
damauler12: LOL! I already got my butt kicked this season by my old squad!!! Moving to PSU from OSU was actually a pretty easy choice. 1st...PSU is likely the best D1A destination in GD in my opinion. When a PSU opens up...you have to apply. 2nd...OSU is maybe the hardest Elite to recruit from. You have PSU to East, Mich to North, ND to West, and Tenn in South. So given the chance to go from the hardest Elite to the maybe the easiest...you have to take it.
WIS: Your run of 13 consecutive conference championships, which coincided with six national championships, ended in season 83 at Valdosta State University in the Stagg world. You've now had a three-year dry spell. Who knocked you off your perch? Any plans to reclaim the conference throne?
damauler12: Looks like davidb2005 is the new king of GSC South. I always have plans to get my title back. I actually think the WIS gods have turned the doom switch on for myself and gt_deuce in that world. One of us had won every NC since season 77...now we are 0-2 the last 2 seasons!
WIS: What is your strategy for recruiting?
damauler12: Depends on the level of course. At DIII, I would advise reading the manifesto I wrote for that level. At DII...mostly the same as DIII but with more money to go across country. D1A...now that's a whole different animal. I would say the thing that most people do wrong at that level is not understand when and where they have advantages. Like take my former OSU team. There, I could rarely plant my flag on a recruit 1st cycle or at the very least be very selective about who I went after. If I just started knocking sims off of every decent player I liked in my 180, then it's pretty likely that PSU, ND, Mich, Tenn., and others also show up on those recruits. No matter how much money I have...I likely can't battle 2 or 3 other Elites. Now on the other side...if I have 15 scholly's and Mich. has 7...I will gladly start planting my flag on recruits in his back yard. At Miami if a player is good and in my 180...I am planting my flag on him 100% of the time knowing I will rarely get friction even from Florida or FSU.
WIS: What is your strategy for game planning?
damauler12: I am way more vanilla than most coaches I would guess. If I can get a mismatch somewhere...say someone playing 3-4 against my ND Box...I run all day. If they play 5-2 against Trips...pass all day. Otherwise...I pretty much stick to the strength of my teams. I am actually an incredibly lazy game-planner. I may have a few more NC's if I wasn't so lazy.
WIS: Do you have any favorite players from any of your GD teams?
damauler12: *NERD ALERT* I actually do a have a few. Joseph Henderson at Winona set the rushing yards record in DII Warner and led us to a NC. Jose Smith at Winona had the #3, #5, & #7 rushing yardage seasons and his other season just misses top 10. Winona QB Jack Jackson, I am pretty sure holds the all worlds...all levels for Yards in a season (14,274) & TD's (184). My Capital QB's hold the top 2 spots and 3 of top 5 in Camp DIII for Yards and TD's. QB Randy Lindsey at Valdosta holds the top 2 spots for Yards and TD's.
WIS: How much time do you spend on your Gridiron Dynasty teams? How much do you think is necessary to be competitive?
damauler12: I don't spend near as much time as I used to for sure. I would say now that I spend a huge majority of my time in recruiting and very little on the rest. Not sure how much time I would say it takes to be competitive, but it is FAR less now that yatzr made his recruiting tool for everyone. HUGE THANKS!!!
WIS: If you were to give one piece of advice to a new user, what would it be?
WIS: What is your favorite aspect of Gridiron Dynasty?
damauler12: Recruiting by a large margin. I am the guy who gets NCAA every season for my Xbox and then rarely actually play the game! I would spend hours just recruiting players and making teams and then simming seasons. Then I found a world where I could recruit against others and I was hooked!
WIS: Least Favorite?
damauler12: Not much. I wish reward points were as good as they used to be back in the day!
WIS: What is one feature you want to see implemented in a future update?
damauler12: I would like to see more specific player features. Like OL who have grades in pass blocking and run blocking so you could build teams that could be widely different. Instead of everyone recruiting the same 90/90 OL...we would have to find guys who fit our system more.
WIS: Who are the users you respect and/or enjoy the most?
damauler12: Too many!!! I am sure I will forget some, but here are a few that stand out. Nelsonba25, badaxe, slid64er, and especially jtwhiz were the 1st guys that really helped me with my game. I would be less than mediocre w/o their help. I really enjoy either competing against or just flat respect...gt_deuce, DKC, caesari, yatzr, bhazlewood, wayllander, birkland, johndish, big_red_one, jas_illini, da_goat, dawgnuts, bhouska, cougdawg, hookemhorns7, cebrake, umspoon, & jeffbrown. Hope I didn't forget too many!!!
WIS: If you were in one of our games, what sport would you play, at what position, and what would you be rated?
damauler12: GD obv and I would be a legit white option QB!!! Ath-75, Spd-80, Str-70, Elu-82, GI-74, & Tech-74! Pretty sure I would be a top 5 recruit!!!
WIS: Thanks to damauler12 for taking the time to field our questions and for his contributions to WhatIfSports.com.
