One Giant Leap: Super Bowl Power Rankings

New York's 2011 Super Bowl team ranks 20th

The New York Giants won their second Super Bowl of the Eli Manning era, defeating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, just as they did in Super Bowl XLII. With the victory, the franchise improves to a record of 4-1 in Super Bowl appearances.

We simulated a round-robin tournament featuring every Giants Super Bowl team to see how the current squad stacks up to the best teams in franchise history. Using our NFL simulation engine, we played the 2011 Giants head-to-head, 1,001 times, with the 2007, 2000, 1990 and 1986 Giants.

12011 New York Giants61.127.724.2
21990 New York Giants50.121.921.9
32000 New York Giants49.722.322.3
41986 New York Giants47.522.223.1
52007 New York Giants41.521.824.4

The findings suggest this year's Giants team may be the best yet. Manning's 4,933 passing yards on the season, fourth-best in the league, impressed the engine as the 2011 edition outscored the other four Giants teams. Meanwhile, Manning's 2007 team was the most offensively-challenged in the simulation. Manning passed for 3,336 yards in 2007, but his team rallied from a 10-6 record to beat the previously-undefeated Patriots in one of the Super Bowl's biggest upsets.

We also simulated the 2011 Giants against the other 45 Super Bowl champions. Using our NFL simulation engine, we played a round-robin tournament in which each team played 101 games against every opponent, generating the win percentage and average score from those games. The 2011 Giants won 51.3 percent of the time, good enough for 20th among the 46 participants. At 27.1 points per game, the Giants scored the eighth-most points in the simulation. However, their defense also surrendered the third-most, allowing opponents to score 27.0 points per game.
